Coal Krispie Treats

Being bad never tasted so good!

Coal Krispie Treats

It is somewhat of a Christmas tradition that good little boys and girls get gifts, and the not so good ones get lumps of coal.  Well, this is a new twist on that dreaded lump of coal.  It easy to make, cheap, and can be given as a gift to just about anyone!  Plus everyone will ask where you got it and imagine their reaction when you get to tell them that you made them yourself!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups miniature marshmallows or 30 large marshmallows
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups rice cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups crushed Oreo cookies (leave the filling in the cookies)
  • 4 – 10 drops black gel food coloring (enough to turn the marshmallows black. The amount will depend based on the brand you use).

Directions:

1. In a large microwave-safe mixing bowl, heat your marshmallows and butter for 60-90 seconds. Until the butter and marshmallow are melted.

2. Stir your marshmallows and mix in your food coloring until you achieve the desired color.

3. Now mix in your rice cereal and the crushed Oreo cookies. Use a heavy metal spoon as it is quite hard to stir all of the

4. Let sit for about 5 minutes until your marshmallows cool down
5. Use a tablespoon to scoop out your treats onto a piece of parchment paper.

6. Let cool for 20 – 30 minutes.
7. Pack your treats a little more tightly by using your hands.

The final product will be harder, denser, and drier than your traditional Rice Krispies treats, but the Oreos will make it more flavorful.

Nutella and Marshmallow Turnovers

You can bake them on a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. I used a baking sheet and silicone set from Artisan Metal Works. They have a great set including a cookie sheet and silicone mat that fits the baking sheet perfectly. The turnovers came off very well with no sign of sticking. You can check out the silicone sheets at Amazon here – Artisan Metal Works Half Size Baking Sheet, Cover, and Non-Stick Mat

Nutella and Marshmallow Turnovers
Prep time:  15 mins
Cook time:  40 mins
Total time:  55 mins
Serves: 8
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  2. Thaw the puff pastry and if it does not come pre-rolled, roll it out on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into eight 5×5 inch squares.
  3. Spread 2 tbsp of Nutella in the middle portion of each pastry square. Drop about 12 mini marshmallows on top of the Nutella.
  4. Whisk together the egg white and the water.
  5. Brush some of the egg wash around the border of the square. Fold over the turnover and gently press down along the side with your fingers to make sure there is an even seal. Use a fork to crimp all the edges so the filling will not leak out.
  6. Brush some egg wash on top of each turnover. Sprinkle some sugar on top.
  7. Place the turnovers on a baking sheet, leaving at least 1 inch space between them.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastry is lightly browned around the edges.
